The company began as the family business Widow J. Ahrend & Son, founded in 1896 and selling drafting tables and drawing supplies. In the 1930s, the company moved into office furniture and acquired stakes in Oda and De Cirkel; after merging to form Ahrend Groep NV, furniture production became the basis of its operations. The De Cirkel steel furniture factory joined the group in 1939.
Friso Kramer designed for De Cirkel from 1948 to 1963, creating the Revolt (1953) and Result (1958, with Wim Rietveld) models; from 1971 to 1983, he was the group’s artistic director. Wim Rietveld also worked for De Cirkel. In 1971, a design team was established with the participation of H. Verkerke, W. Rodenburg and B. Pruyser.
