The glassworks in Baccarat, Lorraine, was founded in 1764 with the approval of Louis XV, granted to Cardinal-Bishop Louis-Joseph de Laval-Montmorency. The first crystal furnace was fired in 1816. From 1860, products were marked with a label bearing the trademark, and from 1936 the mark was etched with acid or applied by sandblasting.
In 1948, a subsidiary was established in New York, and in 1964, on the occasion of the manufactory’s 200th anniversary, a retrospective was presented at the Louvre. Until 2005, Baccarat was owned by Groupe du Louvre, then by Starwood Capital, and since 2018 by Fortune Fountain Capital. The company runs Musée Baccarat in Baccarat and in Paris at Place des États-Unis.
