The company was founded in 1904 in Rüti, in the canton of Zurich, as Eisen- und Metallbettenfabrik Rüti. In the 1930s, it produced tubular steel furniture and school benches; after the Second World War, hospital beds; in the late 1970s, the “ergodata” office system; and later the “eQ” system and garden furniture.
The manufacturer produced designs by, among others, Alfred Roth (bed, 1927), Max Ernst Haefeli (1020/1021 chairs and garden tables, 1938), and Huldreich Altorfer (sun lounger, 1948). From the 1930s to the 1950s, it worked with Marcel Breuer. Embru furniture was sold, among others, by Zurich-based Wohnbedarf.
