The company was founded in 1907 by Heinrich Flötotto in Avenwedde (now part of Gütersloh) as a bedroom furniture factory. In 1946, it was taken over by Franz Flötotto. Following the bankruptcy of his company in 1978, his brother Fritz expanded the range to include furniture for the home. The brand's best-known product is Profilsystem, while the Lumibär lamp gained popularity in the 1990s.

In 1998, 75% of the shares were sold to Welle Holding AG. Following insolvency in 2002, the company was recovered by the family; after a second insolvency in 2007, it was decided to close it. In 2008, the brand was taken over by Elmar Flötotto, and production of Profilsystem resumed. In 2019, Flötotto Systemmöbel GmbH filed for insolvency, and the name passed to Flötotto Einrichtungssysteme GmbH in Gütersloh.
