The tradition of ceramics in Gmunden dates back to 1492. In 1843, Franz and Franziska Schleiss bought the local Hafnerhaus, and in 1903 Leopold Schleiss founded Gmundner Tonwarenfabrik. In 1909, Künstlerische Werkstätte was established, collaborating with artists from Wiener Werkstätte. In 1923, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company.
In 1968, the manufactory was acquired by Johannes Fürst Hohenberg, who placed an emphasis on tableware; together with Gudrun Wittke-Baudisch, he co-created the Gruppe H design studio. In 1975, the company was granted the right to use the federal emblem. The distinctive Flammdekor – a green band on white glaze – was added to Austria’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2021. Subsequent owners included the von Moy family (1997) and Markus Friesacher (2018).
