Gordon Russell (1892–1980) was associated with Broadway, where his father took over the Lygon Arms hotel in 1904. In 1922, Russell exhibited his furniture, and in 1925, 30 craftspeople worked in his workshop in Broadway. A shop opened in London in 1929, his brother R.D. Russell joined as a designer in 1930, and in 1935 a factory was opened in Park Royal, producing, among other things, cabinets for Murphy radios.
Gordon Russell chaired the Utility Furniture Design Panel in 1943, and from 1947 headed the Council of Industrial Design. From 1957, the company’s design director was Ray Leigh; after Russell’s death, the business operated as Russell, Hodgson & Leigh. The Gordon Russell Design Museum, opened in 2008, operates in Broadway.
