The company was founded in 1906 by Salamon Hille in East London (the East End). After 1949, the founder’s granddaughter, Rosamind Julius, and her husband led the company’s transformation; the Julius family ran the company for the following three decades, until its sale in 1983.

Collaboration with Robin Day began in 1949, when he designed the Hille logo; over the following three decades, Day regularly designed furniture for the company. These designs included the Hillestak chair (1951), armchairs for the Royal Festival Hall (1951), the Polyprop chair (1963; production of the Polyside version from 1964, and the armchair from 1967) and the E series (1971). In 1979, Fred Scott designed the Supporto chair for Hille.

Hille furniture is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (including Supporto, Q Rod and Polypropylene Chair Mk II) and the Design Museum. After its sale in 1983, the company changed owners; since 2008 it has operated as Hille Ltd (Brian Foster), and in 2012 production was moved to Rassau in Ebbw Vale, Wales.
