The glassworks was established in 1891 in the town of Johansfors in Småland; one of its founders was F.O. Israelsson, who ran the works until 1950. From 1904 to 1911, it belonged to AB De Svenska Kristallglasbruken. After 1950, management was taken over by Sixten Wennerstrand, who modernised the glassworks.

Designers for Johansfors included Gunnar Håkansson, Gustaf Hallberg, Bengt Orup, Margareta and Rik Hennix, and Ingegerd Råman. In 1972, the glassworks was sold to the Afors Group, known as OrreforsKostaBoda from 1990, and in 1992 it was bought out by former employees. The later history of the works was linked to the Norwegian glass manufacturer Magnor.
