Lauritz Hjorth (1834–1912) began producing terracotta in Rønne in 1859, and in 1862 moved the factory to Krystalgade 5, where it still operates; some sources accept 1862 as the year of its founding. From the 1880s, black glaze was used, brown stoneware with polychrome decoration was produced from 1913 to 1940, and from 1927 the factory made apothecary vessels for Danish pharmacies.
The company was successively run by the founder’s sons, Peter (1873–1959) and Hans (1878–1966), and subsequently by Erik Hjorth (1906–1982). The kilns were wood-fired until 1964, then fuelled by gas and electricity. Since 1995, the factory has operated as a working museum (Hjorths Fabrik – Bornholms Keramikmuseum) within Bornholms Museum.
