Laurel Lamp Company was founded in 1946 in Newark, New Jersey, by Max Weiss and his sons, Harold and Murray. Throughout its operation, from 1946 to 1981, the factory was located at the corner of Rome Street and Magazine Street in Newark. Max Weiss already had experience in the lighting industry: in 1913, he co-founded Habacht and Weiss, later transformed into Sunset Lighting Fixture Co., and in 1924 into Mutual-Sunset Lamp Mfg.

Laurel’s lamp designers included Harold Weiss and sculptor Richard “Dick” Barr. In 1971, the company introduced lamps with Venetian glass made by House of Salviati, and in 1977, a collection developed in collaboration with Pierre Cardin.

The company remained in the Weiss family’s hands for more than two decades. In April 1969, Laurel Lamp was acquired by Instrument Systems Corp. for $3.6 million. In 1981, its corporate status was revoked, and in 1983 the company’s assets were purchased by Westwood Lighting Group.
