The company was founded in 1934 by Jacob Jacobsen as Jac. Jacobsen A/S, initially trading in textile machinery. In 1938, it began producing work lamps under the Luxo brand, which went on to achieve worldwide recognition; its best-known product is the L-1 architect's lamp.

From 1949, Johan Bernhard Riis imported Luxo lamps to the USA, and in 1952 he co-founded Luxo Lamp Corporation; a Canadian company was established in 1953. In 2009, Luxo became part of the Glamox Group and adopted the name Glamox Luxo.
