The lava lamp (Astro) was invented around 1963 by Edward Craven Walker, inspired by a timer he noticed in a pub in Dorset. Together with his wife Christine, he produced it for European markets under the Crestworth name, while licensing it abroad; the rights to the North American market were sold in 1966 to Lava Simplex International.

In Europe, Craven Walker's original lamps have been produced continuously since the early 1960s in Poole, Dorset. Millions were sold in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1989, Crestworth was acquired by Cressida Granger and David Mulley; in 1992, it changed its name to Mathmos.
