The glassworks was founded in Urjala in 1793 by Jacob Wilhelm de Pont and Harald Furnhjelm. The place name also occurs in the Swedish form Notsjö. Initially, bottles and window glass were produced there. In 1950, the plant was acquired by the Wärtsilä Group. The glassworks’ artistic director was Kaj Franck, who held this position until 1976; Oiva Toikka and Heikki Orvola, among others, also designed for it.
In 1988, Nuutajärvi was merged with the Iittala glassworks to form Iittala-Nuutajärvi Oy, and glass production in Nuutajärvi ended in 2014. Objects from this glassworks are held, among others, in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
