The company was founded in 1945 by Giuseppe Ostuni. In 1951, Oluce presented a light fitting designed by Franco Buzzi at the 9th Triennale in Milan; in 1955, two lamps by Tito Agnolego were selected for the Compasso d’Oro, including floor lamp model 363. The 255/387 lamp (“Agnoli”, 1954) marked the beginning of the floor-lamp era.

Gianni and Joe Colombo designed the Acrilica table lamp (in the catalogue from 1962, Gold Medal at the 13th Triennale), while Marco Zanuso designed lamp 275 (1963). Joe Colombo’s Spider series (1965) brought Oluce its first Compasso d’Oro; his Coupé lamp (1967) is in MoMA. The first halogen lamp for interiors was created in 1970 and produced from 1972.
