The factory was founded in 1946 by Knut Sæter in Vatne, Sunnmøre; a year later, his brother Jostein became a co-owner. From 1957, Fredrik A. Kayser (1924–1968) was Vatne’s designer. His 711 armchair won first prize in a national furniture competition in 1960, while the factory produced the 599 rocking armchair from 1958. The Modell 571 armchair from around 1959 is held in the collection of the National Museum in Oslo.

After Kayser’s death in 1968, Sigurd Resell became the chief designer. His Falcon armchair, prepared for a competition in 1970, entered production in 1971.

Stokke acquired the company in 1989. The brand was revived in 2002, the factory closed in 2008, and in 2010 it resumed operations as Vatne Møbler. Vatne armchairs from the 1950s–70s come to MIDMOD as individual pieces.
