Yngvar Sandström graduated in 1948 from an art school in Gothenburg, now operating as HDK-Valand. He then worked for several years at NK Verkstäder in Nyköping – the furniture workshops of department store Nordiska Kompaniet – where he was involved, among other things, with the NK Triva collection – a series of furniture sold by the department store.
In 1960, he founded the S-design design office in Malmö together with Alf Svensson, a long-standing designer for Dux. In 1971, the Galaxy armchair was created for Dux, with a construction made of injection-moulded plastic. According to Möbeldesignmuseum, preparing the injection mould took over a year and cost around half a million kronor, and the armchair was also successful in foreign markets.
Sandström’s clients and partners included the lighting company Bergbom Belysning, Miljöexpo and Nässjö Stolfabrik. The designer also worked with rattan imported from the Philippines, combining furniture made of plastic, wood and natural materials in his practice. The Swedish Möbeldesignmuseum describes the designer’s biography, but does not give his dates of life or place of birth. At MIDMOD, his designs appear as individual pieces from the secondary market.
