Anders Österlin was a self-taught painter. In 1945, together with C.O. Hultén, he co-founded the Imaginisterna group in Scania, which maintained contacts with the Cobra movement. In 1948, he exhibited at Høstudstillingen, and in 1951 took part in Cobra exhibitions in Paris and Liège. His panels for Bregnerødhytten date from 1949; five have survived at Sophienholm.

Over time, he turned towards non-figurative art; he also worked in advertising graphics and posters. In 1968, he prepared the poster and catalogue for the exhibition “The Machine as seen at the End of the Mechanical Age” at Moderna Museet, both now held at Röhsska museet. In 1974, he made a colour lithograph for an Amnesty International portfolio supporting prisoners in Chile, now in the collection of Malmö Konstmuseum.

His works are held by Moderna Museet (14 objects, including the 1959 painting “Rött landskap” and six posters), Malmö Konstmuseum (including the 1948 wax-crayon drawing “Hus om kvinnor och fåglar”, acquired in 1963), Röhsska museet and Nationalmuseum.
