Bertel Richard Gardberg was born on 24 August 1916 in Ekenäs (Tammisaari) and died on 23 March 2007 in Karis. He trained in Copenhagen and, towards the end of the 1940s, opened his own workshop in Helsinki. He worked primarily on household objects – including Karelia cutlery for Hackman – as well as liturgical objects.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he also worked in France and Ireland, and from 1973 had a workshop in Fiskars. He combined silver with steel, stone and wood. He received the Lunning Prize and the Pro Finlandia Medal (1961), gold medals at the Milan Triennale (1954, 1957), and the Prince Eugen Medal (1991).
