Bertil Vallien was born on 17 January 1938 in Stockholm. From 1955, he studied at Konstfack, specialising in ceramics under Stig Lindberg; in 1961, he graduated with the Slöjdföreningen silver medal. He studied at the University of Southern California on scholarships and worked as a designer at a Californian pottery manufacturer.
After returning to Sweden in 1963, he designed glass for the centenary of Boda glassworks, then worked at Åfors and, from 2012, at Kosta. He works primarily with cast glass. He was married to the artist Ulrica Hydman Vallien.
