Erik Pløen was born on 10 February 1925 in Gran and died on 10 October 2004 in Son. He began as an apprentice in the workshop of Schneider and Knutzen, the first modern ceramic workshop in Norway. He opened his own workshop in 1946, worked exclusively in stoneware from 1957, and in 1964 became the first person in Norway to use a gas kiln.
He drew inspiration from historic Oriental ceramics, developing his own style of form and glaze; after 1970, natural forms became a recurring motif. In 1963–1964, he was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. In 1961, he received the Lunning Prize; his work is held in Norwegian museums of applied art and international collections.
