Gunnel Nyman was born on 19 September 1909 in Turku and died on 7 October 1948. From 1928 to 1932, she studied at Centralskolen för Konstflit in Helsinki.
From 1933, she designed for the Riihimäki glassworks, and later also for Nuutajärvi and Karhula-Iittala. Her designs include the Serpentiini vases (Nuutajärvi) and Calla (1946). Together with Paavo Tynell, she designed lamps for the Svenska Teatern, made by Taito. In 1951, three years after her death, she was posthumously awarded a gold medal at the Milan Triennale, bringing her short, barely twenty-year career as a designer to a close.
