Karin Mobring was born in Sweden in 1932. She studied at Konstfack in Stockholm, where she studied ceramics from 1946, and at Carl Malmsten's school, which she graduated from in 1951. For the next thirteen years, from 1951 to 1964, she worked at her father's construction company in the Östersund and Frösön region.
She joined IKEA in 1964, when the company's founder Ingvar Kamprad hired her after seeing an armchair designed by her at Stockholm Furniture Fair. She worked for the company until 1993, almost three decades, and designed around 100 products for it. These included the Jana (1966), Amiral (1969), Cromi (1970) and Jerry (1972) models, as well as Karusell, Diana, Krumelur and Natura, and the Stockholm collection from the 1980s, developed jointly with Tomas Jelinkek.
The designer's legacy is the Karin Mobring Fund, established to support Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Karin Mobring died in 2005, twelve years after ending her collaboration with IKEA.
