Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (real name Maria Ludwig Michael Mies) was born on 27 March 1886 in Aachen and died on 17 August 1969 in Chicago. He was the son of a stonemason; from 1905 he worked for Bruno Paul, and from 1908 to 1912 in the office of Peter Behrens.

As artistic director of the Werkbund, he organised an exhibition at the Weißenhof estate in Stuttgart, and from 1930 to 1932 he directed the Bauhaus. In 1927 he designed a cantilever chair, and two years later the Barcelona chair; from the mid-1920s he collaborated with Lilly Reich. He was a leading representative of the International Style and also worked in the USA.
