Margarete Heymann was born on 10 August 1899 in Cologne and died on 11 November 1990 in London. From 1916 to 1919, she studied painting at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Cologne, then studied at the Bauhaus.

In 1923, she founded Haël-Werkstätten für Künstlerische Keramik in Marwitz, Brandenburg, with her first husband, Gustav Loebenstein. In the 1920s, it gained international renown for its simple, modern utilitarian ceramics. In 1933, she closed the workshop, and in 1934 was forced to sell it below its value. In 1936, she emigrated to England, where in 1938 she founded Greta Pottery with her second husband, Harold Marks; after the war, she focused mainly on painting.
