Michael Schilkin was born on 19 May 1900 in Saint Petersburg and died on 3 August 1962 in Helsinki. In 1921, he arrived in Finland as a refugee; from 1924 to 1927, he studied sculpture at the Central School of Applied Art in Helsinki.

His sculptures were noticed by Arabia's artistic director Kurt Ekholm, and in 1937 Schilkin began working in the factory's art department, where he remained until his death. That same year, he was the only Arabia artist to receive a gold medal at the world's fair in Paris. In 1946, he worked for several months at Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik in Copenhagen. He is best known for his ceramic animal sculptures.
