Gertrud (Trude) Petri was born on 25 August 1906 in Hamburg and died on 5 February 1998 in Vancouver. She trained in pottery in Hamburg, and from 1927 studied in the porcelain class at Vereinigte Staatsschulen in Berlin. In 1929, director Günther von Pechmann employed her as a designer at KPM Berlin.

Between 1930 and 1932, she designed the Urbino service, based on the forms of the circle and sphere and meeting the principles of Werkbund and Bauhaus; it received a gold medal at the Milan Triennale (1936) and the Grand Prix at the World's Fair in Paris (1937), and KPM still produces it today. She also modernised the Neuberlin service and, with the sculptor Siegmund Schütze, created the Arkadia series (from 1938).
