Vilhelm Wohlert was born on 27 May 1920 in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, among others under Kaare Klint. From 1951–1953 he was a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and from 1968–1986 a professor at the Academy. He died on 10 May 2007 in Klampenborg. His partner was the architect Jørgen Bo (1919–1999); together they ran the Bo & Wohlert practice.
The duo’s most important realisation is Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, north of Copenhagen. Work on the museum began in 1958 and, together with subsequent extensions, continued for 33 years. The practice also designed Kunstmuseum Bochum, which opened in 1960, and Gustav-Lübcke-Museum in Hamm, among others. The architects’ work at Louisiana is the subject of the monograph “A Qualified Utopia: The Work of Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert at the Louisiana Museum”.
Wohlert received, among others, the Eckersberg Medal and the C.F. Hansen Medal (1979). The duo’s furniture designs are not widely documented in verified sources – objects appearing at MIDMOD are attributed to them based on the description of the specific piece.
