Ward Bennett was born on 17 November 1917 in New York (Washington Heights) as Howard Bernstein and died on 13 August 2003 in Key West. He studied at the Paris Académie de la Grande Chaumière (1937) and in Florence, at Istituto d'Arte Porta Romana.

He made his debut with an exhibition at the Whitney Museum in 1944. For the SOM architectural practice, he designed the interiors of the Crown Zellerbach (1959) and Chase Manhattan (1961) headquarters. For many years he was associated with Brickel Associates – initially working on furniture reproductions, then as chief designer. From 1987, he was director of design at Geiger, which launched his collection in 1990. He also designed cutlery for Sasaki.

Among his designs produced by Geiger are chairs including Bumper, Scissor Chair, Sled Chair and Landmark Chair, as well as I-Beam tables. Bennett's work is now held in museum collections, including MoMA, Cooper Hewitt and Brooklyn Museum.
