Wim Rietveld was born in 1924 in Utrecht and died in 1985 in Badhoevedorp. He was the son of architect Gerrit Rietveld. After attending a vocational school, he worked at Servo Balans as a designer and head of the drawing office, and from 1950 attended an industrial design course in The Hague.
From 1953, he designed for Gispen, including the President chair and lamps. In 1958, he created the Mondial chair together with his father; it was presented at Expo 58 in Brussels. He then worked with De Cirkel until 1970, designing the Pyramid chair and, together with Friso Kramer, the Reply drawing table.
Wim Rietveld’s work extended far beyond furniture – he was an industrial designer in the full sense of the word. From 1959 to 1979, he developed machinery for Vicon; in 1966, he designed the so-called standaardbus, a standard Dutch city bus, and also took part in designing the first Amsterdam metro. He passed on his experience to students: he taught in The Hague from 1960 to 1975, and from 1973 to 1979 was a professor in Delft.
