Sykkylven is a Norwegian town associated with, among others, the manufacturer Ekornes and designer Adolf Relling. In Ikornnes, in the municipality of Sykkylven, Jens Ellingsen Ekornes founded J.E. Ekornes Fjærfabrikk in 1934, initially manufacturing springs for upholstered furniture – the later Ekornes group. The mechanism for the Stressless armchair, produced since 1971, was developed in collaboration with Møre Designteam from Sykkylven.

Adolf Relling was born in Sykkylven in 1913 and was a co-founder of the Rastad & Relling office; one of his early designs was an armchair made in 1939 for Vestlandske Møbelfabrikk in Sykkylven.
